What the rest buttons do
The two rule sets differ on both rests, which is why each character has a rules version.
| Effect | SRD 5.1 | SRD 5.2.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Short rest healing | Spend Hit Dice: roll plus Con modifier each | Same, and each die heals at least 1 |
| Short rest at 0 hit points | No minimum stated | Needs at least 1 hit point to start |
| Long rest hit points | All back | All back |
| Long rest Hit Dice | Half your total back (at least 1) | All back |
| Long rest exhaustion | Down 1 if you ate and drank | Down 1 |
| Temporary hit points | End at a long rest | End at a long rest |
| Spell slots | Each spellcasting class gets its slots back on a long rest; Pact Magic slots also return on a short rest. | |
Both versions say you need at least 1 hit point to start a long rest, so the button does nothing at 0. The sheet also clears death saves on a long rest, because you can only start one with hit points, and regaining hit points resets them. Features that recharge on a rest (like a class feature with uses per day) are not tracked; note them in Notes.
How the numbers are worked out
| Number | Formula | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ability modifier | (score minus 10) divided by 2, rounded down | Both SRDs |
| Proficiency bonus | +2 at levels 1 to 4, +3 at 5 to 8, +4 at 9 to 12, +5 at 13 to 16, +6 at 17 to 20 | Character Advancement table, both SRDs |
| Saving throw | Modifier, plus proficiency bonus if proficient | Both SRDs |
| Skill | Modifier of its ability, plus proficiency bonus (twice with expertise) | Both SRDs |
| Passive Perception | 10 plus your Perception bonus | Both SRDs |
| Initiative | Dexterity modifier plus any extra bonus | Both SRDs |
| Spell save DC | 8 plus proficiency bonus plus spellcasting modifier | Class spellcasting rules, both SRDs |
| Spell attack | Proficiency bonus plus spellcasting modifier | Class spellcasting rules, both SRDs |
Advantage, disadvantage and situational bonuses are not added, since they change roll to roll. With a passive score, advantage adds 5 and disadvantage takes 5 away.
Damage and death saves
Damage takes temporary hit points first. At 0 hit points, any damage counts as one failed death save, or two if it was a critical hit, and damage equal to your hit point maximum kills outright. Dropping to 0 with leftover damage at least equal to your maximum also kills: a character with 12 maximum and 6 left who takes 18 damage dies. Any healing clears both rows of death saves. These rules are the same in both SRDs.
Roll death saves with a plain d20: 10 or higher is a success, a 1 counts as two failures, and a 20 brings you back with 1 hit point. Tap the boxes to record them. Three successes make you stable; three failures and the character dies.
Exhaustion
Under SRD 5.1 each level adds an effect: disadvantage on ability checks, then half speed, then disadvantage on attacks and saves, then half hit point maximum, then speed 0, and level 6 is death. Under SRD 5.2.1 each level takes 2 off every d20 test and 5 feet off your speed, and level 6 is death. The sheet shows the effects for your version but does not change your numbers for them.
Saving, export and import
Every change saves straight away in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. If you clear your browser data or use a private window, the saved characters go with it, so export a copy you care about.
Export file downloads one character as a small JSON file named after the character. Import file reads one back in as a new character, so you can move it to another phone or restore an old copy. The sheet only accepts its own format, ignores anything it doesn't recognize and caps text lengths, so a damaged or edited file can't break the page.
Print gives a one-page sheet with every section open and the buttons hidden. Choose "Save as PDF" in the print dialog for a file copy.
Questions
Is this an official D&D sheet?
No. It is our own sheet for fifth edition characters, built on the free SRD 5.1 and SRD 5.2.1 rules. It has the same core boxes as a paper sheet and does the arithmetic for you. It has no spell text; type the features and spells you need into Notes, or start with the character creator, which writes short feature summaries there for you.
Which rules version should I pick?
Pick the one your table plays. "SRD 5.1" matches the 2014 rules and "SRD 5.2.1" matches the 2024 revision. The choice changes what a long rest gives back, the exhaustion effects shown, and whether a spent Hit Die can heal you for less than 1.
Can I use it with more than one character?
Yes. Press New character to start another, and use the list at the top to switch. Up to 20 characters fit on one device. Export each one to keep a copy or move it to another phone.
Can it fill in my class and species for me?
Yes, for a new level 1 character: the character creator lets you tap through the SRD 5.2.1 classes, species and backgrounds and then opens the finished character here, with scores, skills, hit points, Armor Class, attacks and gear filled in and short summaries of each feature in Notes. For other characters, or anything from books outside the SRDs, type it in yourself; the sheet keeps to the numbers and trackers every character shares.
